PLATONISM Part 2

July 9, 2008

Plato

Air Date July 20 @ 6:30 am on 104.7FM Host Pastor Roy Aiken, Jr. and Co-Host Shelli Prindle

Major Works

Apology, Phaedo, Republic, Law

Background

PLATO

(428-347 BC)

Greek philosopher

Plato was born into a prominent and rich family in Athens. He lived the luxurious life natural to such a position. However, his friendship with Socrates made him feel that his vocation or calling was to be a thinker rather than an active political leader like his relatives and friends.

After Socrates’ death, Plato entered into a spiritual discipleship of this great man and friend, now departed from him. Plato traveled widely, visiting many parts of the Mediterranean world. He also founded a school, the Academy, in Athens, for young men who wished to learn how to think. The Academy was the “university” of the ancient world. Plato served as the Academy’s director, and took a real part in the teaching and in the supervision of his students.

One of his most vivid and dramatic examples of Plato’s philosophy is here theory of the forms.

According to Plato, those objects that we seem to see around us – chairs and tables, trees and mountains, ants – and planets – are not what is ultimately real. They are mere shadows or reflections of the truly real objects – the forms.

A tree is a tree because we know what a tree is?

“Negative Dimensions” Norman L. Giesler

A. Metaphysical Dualism

1. Creation is ex Materia – out of preexisting matter making the universe eternal . Heb 1:10-12KJV

B. Finite Godism – or to Plato the former or Demiurgos

1. If God is finite he would also be a product of the universe and would not be creator. Psalm 93:2KJV

C. Anthropological Dualism – the imprisonment of the soul inside the body.

1. Our body is a Temple not a prison 1Cor 3:16-17KJV, 6:19-20KJV, 2Cor 5:1-4KJV

D. Allegorism – The deeper meaning of things.

1. The material world is no less real than the spiritual God has made all things for his pleasure. Rev 4:11KJV

E. Innatism of ideas – an accumulation of ideas from previous existence.

1. Man could not be preexistent because Adam was created within the realm of time and space. Gen 2:7KJV

F. Reincarnation – Recycled souls

1. Man only lives once. Gen 5KJV

G. Humanistic optimism – people are perfected though knowledge

1. People are perfected through the work of sanctification and redemption. 1Pt 5:10KJV
