MELVIN THE MOUSE

October 9, 2008

Mouse

Melvin is your typical mouse; small, furry, and very cute, you know the stereotypical Jerry. His big ears and big eyes would melt your heart. Still it goes without saying no matter how cute a mouse is, he has no place in the house.

What Melvin was thinking no one really knows? Nevertheless, for some strange reason he thought, “I’m going to see what’s inside the big brown house.” Therefore, he went to his family and his friends to see if anyone else would like to go on this adventure with him.

They all declined with vigor saying, if you go into that house that cat will eat you. I am not worried about that cat said Melvin. Another mouse warned Melvin sternly saying; if the cat does not eat you, the people will capture you and put you in a cage.

Melvin arrogantly said, “Enough with the small talk; nothing you all said will keep me from going to the big brown house.” I leave tomorrow at sunrise Melvin boldly announced.

Melvin went to bed dreaming of the great adventures that lie ahead of him the next day. Early in the morning, before any mouse would even think of moving about Melvin leaves his house in a rush. Whistling his favorite song and prancing like a ballerina, he made his way to the house.

After several passes around the home, he finally spots a hole that would lead him in. Oh yes he said quietly to himself I have made it, I am in the house. What fun I will have today. What food I will find. I will find a hiding place and no one will ever know that I am here.

No sooner than he finished saying those words, he hears an awful cry. A mouse a mouse a mouse is in the kitchen, the mother said. The mother picked up a broom and began to chase Melvin around the kitchen. Melvin ran as fast as his furry little feet could take him.

Finally, after ten minutes he found a way to escape from the kitchen. Nevertheless, as soon as he caught his breathe he heard a voice, a cold, soft, slick voice say, come here Mister Mouse I will not hurt you. I just want to play. He knew the voice was the voice of the cat. His worst nightmare had come true.

Please do not eat me Mister Cat said Melvin. If you let me go I’ll leave the house and never come back again. The cat said no, no, my friend I have no plans of eating you I just want to play. To play, asked Melvin. Yes to play said the cat. If I come out will you promise not to eat me asked Melvin. I promise said the cat.

Melvin slowly came out from hiding expecting the worst. However, much to his surprise the cat did not eat him right away. He simply looked him over and said, you should have never come here scaring the women like you did. Now I will be forced to eat you.

The cat then pounced on Melvin and gripped him in his mouth. Melvin jerked and tried to get free but the cat was to strong. Melvin thought this was the end. Yet after holding Melvin in his mouth for what seemed to be a lifetime, he put him down placing his foot on his neck.

He then said to Melvin, I would like to make you a deal. Melvin could hardly speak from the pushing of the cat’s paw on his neck. Therefore, he simply wagged his head in acceptance. The cat said, I will release you and count to three, if you can escape from the house you are free, but If I catch you a second time you will be my breakfast.

So the cat released him and began to count 1, 2, 3,. By the time the cat got to three Melvin had already made his way to the second floor. Not knowing where he was, he entered a bed room not looking behind him. The cat was hot on his trail.

Melvin looked around for a split second, Then leaping with all his might, he landed on a bed. There sleeping under the covers was a little boy about the age of ten. The cat waited at the door knowing Melvin had only one way out of the room.

Melvin was scared stiff. His eyes full of water he decided to climb under the covers to hide from the cat’s glare. When he climbed under the covers, his furry body tickled the boy, and he woke up only to find a mouse sitting on him. The little boy leaped from his bed and threw the covers across the room.

The covers landed on the cat. The cat being covered up could not see his way. Melvin ran like a bolt of lightning; down the stairs, through the living room into the kitchen, Melvin found his way to the place where he had first entered the house. Melvin left the big brown house in a hurry. He returned home to his family and friends having learned a valuable lesson. Melvin learned that day the curiosity can kill mice as well as cats.
